Balance of Pūmotu - elements

Intuition, insight, wisdom, balance, health and well-being...

This Taonga is named Balance of Pūmotu. Pūmotu means Element. Therefore, this carving represents the balance of elements within our body and within our environment. The elements represented in this Taonga are fire, air, water and earth.

The first element represented by the round carving is the Sun which is the symbol of life. The suns radiance provides nourishment and warmth to all without bias or discrimination. As such it is symbolic of universal compassion. The key to our deepest happiness is hidden within the light of this understanding. Day is called Te Ao (light). Light is linked with peace and understanding.

There are 11 Koru flowing around the symbol of the sun. They are its radiance. In numerology 11 is a Master number, the number 11 is the most intuitive of all numbers. As such this indicates the radiance of intuitive wisdom and insight flowing from our innermost being into this world and into our mind.

The Pāua inlay in the centre of the design represents the water element. With water we flow and gain strong intuition. This is surrounded by the four air currents that are symbolic of the cardinal directions. This is symbolic of being flexible and able to flow any way we need. Both the air and water symbols are being cradled by an uprising koru representing the new growth that has been supported by the balance of the elements.

Hanging on the bottom of this carving are two pieces of Pounamu. These are the Earth elements. They are the foundation upon which life is possible. They are tōpito o te ao.  They represent the ends of the earth, or other parts of the world. At another level this can also be interpreted as the earths poles.

The right balance of heat, gas, liquids, and solids provides the basis for life. Together this symbolises the balance of all the elements that give rise to the conditions that support health and wellbeing.
The motif on the back of the carving represents the wisdom of 'what arises, must return'. From the nature where the elements arose from, eventually they will return this ultimate nature. It is the way of all things.

The carving comes with a four-plait cord which features a fully adjustable slip knot system to enable to a perfect fit around any size neck. It also comes with an officially signed certificate of authenticity and has been registered in my database of work.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the carving and over time come to fully understand all the various layers of meaning imbued in this creation. I wish you and your family the deepest peace and happiness.
