Matau - taupuhipuhi - interdependence

The markings of koru and the patterns they form represent the interconnected nature of all things. Hence the name of this Taonga is Taupuhipuhi meaning interdependence, mutual reliance, mutual support, mutual dependence.

Matau - Taupuhipuhi

A Matau or hook is a symbol of good luck and spiritual protection.

In general, the Matau signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it attracts the energies of protection, nourishment, peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is a symbol that provides safe journey over water. Therefore, it is considered a good luck charm by travellers and seafarers.

Additional to these meanings I have offered further interpretation of the symbolism held within this Taonga.

In total there are 12 Manaia each with a pāua eye inlay. These Manaia contain several layers of meaning. They represent insight into the 12 dependent links that are the causes of the cycle of life. This holds deep meaning.

The number 12 also signifies completion. It is an important number that is seen in many aspects of nature and history. As such, the Matau is symbolic of navigating our own lives with wisdom and insight. This is attained through spiritual development.

The markings of koru and the patterns they form represent the interconnected nature of all things. Hence the name of this Taonga is Taupuhipuhi meaning interdependence, mutual reliance, mutual support, mutual dependence.

May you complete the journey of understanding and enlightenment.
