Sacred Kōrero of Light

There are many layers of meaning imbued into this carving. This carving is called Sacred Kōrero of light. In summary, it is called this because it is designed to be a talking piece of the orator, guide, and the holder of wisdom.

The title ‘Sacred’ is bestowed upon this carving because hidden within its symbolism are sacred understandings that lead all beings to the ultimate truth, or ‘light’. Through this, their darkness and suffering is dispelled.

Every mark on the carving is leading to this outcome. It is also called ‘Sacred’ because it has been formally blessed through prayer, Mantra, and other blessing rituals...

Sacred Kōrero of Light

Many meanings...

There are many layers of meaning imbued into this carving. It is not easy to articulate them in writing.

It is also called ‘Sacred’ because it has been formally blessed through prayer, Mantra, and other blessing rituals.

At one level the carving represents the interconnectedness of all things. Nothing exists independently and inherently, in and of itself. Everything arises in dependence upon its causes and conditions.

The three ‘tri-twists’ represent the body, speech, and mind. In the centre of these arises the wish-fulfilling jewel. On the front of the wish-fulfilling jewel is an inlay of Pāua. This symbolises our ultimate divine and pure nature. It is also symbolic of strong power, wisdom, and high status.

The six koru surrounding this inlay are symbolic of training our mind so we can perfect the six preeminent qualities of a superior being.

The back side of this jewel has an inlay of buffalo horn. This symbolises strength and protection. This strength is not just our own normal strength that we rely on individually, but is drawn through pure reliance and faith in the powers that are far greater than what our own ordinary selves offers.

Collectively, the nine twists together represent the purification of the nine levels of delusions we have shrouding the natural goodness that resides within our heart. Thus, our natural state which is goodness and love will shine through all that we do.

This carving is covered in Koru and other specific markings. This represents the Mana of Te Kore flowing through and pervading our whole being, our world and environment.

This Taonga is a gift that is now held by a very special Kaumatua Beau Haereroa - Ngāti Porou, Te Aowera.
