He Kaitiaki nui me te aratohu - great protector and guide

This is a guardian referred to as a Taniwha. There are many types of Taniwha. A Taniwha is a guardian of a specific location and usually associated with a body of water. They are similar to the Dragons of Celtic origin.

Taniwha are ferocious creatures or guardians, representing the life force (mauri) of a place in physical form. They were seen as a constant presence in waterways, ensuring that fish and other resources remain plentiful.

This Taniwha is called 'He Kaitiaki nui me te aratohu'. This name means 'great protector and guide'.  This Protector has Paua eyes. The front eye is looking up symbolising higher wisdom and insight.

The markings at the bottom of the tail and on the body of the Taniwha represent a crescent moon. In this context this moon represents harmony, peace and generating great compassion. Therefore this is symbolic of being able to protect and benefit others.

The gift of speech is symbolised by the flow of Koru leaving the mouth of the Taniwha. The koru symbol is common in New Zealand and is inspired by the unfurling of the new fern fronds. Meanings associated with this are new growth, new beginnings and spiritual awakening.

There is a very interesting figure emerging on the wing appearing in the aspect of a Tiki mask. This is symbolic of connecting to our higher power. It is the potent destroyer of negativity.
