Kohatu o te kaitiaki - Stone of the keeper

Dear friend, Kia Ora

This Taonga is a combination of Pounamu and bone with a copper inlay. The Pounamu is the very special Kahurangi stone, sourced from the rivers of Tai Poutini ki te Raki, the northern region of the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It is Ngāi Tahu registered stone (as I am a registered Artisan).

I have named this Kohatu o te kaitiaki meaning Stone of the keeper. Everyone has a “keeper”. Who that keeper represents is very personal to each individual. I do not presume to impose one over and above another, however I offer respect to whichever you are most closely connected too and simply wish for your inner peace to grow.

The markings on the mask depict progression through the 10 higher grounds, states, or realisations that lead to ultimate supreme happiness. This is symbolised by the 10 koru found upon the mouth, cheek, above the eyes and on the forehead.

There is a small mother of pearl inlay symbolising clarity of wisdom and insight. Also, right inside the mouth are four small koru. They represent the oral instructions and stories passed down over the ages. These teach us about ourselves.

Copper is highly conductive, symbolising the ability to be a conduit or channel for great power.

It has been bound using the traditional ‘no hole’ technique.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the carving and over time come to fully understand all the various layers of meaning imbued in this creation. I wish you and your family the deepest peace and happiness.
