Manaia - Whakatutukitanga hirahira

1,390.00

This Taonga is called Whakatutukitanga Hirahira. This name means great achievement. There are so many levels of meaning to this and within the symbolism held within this design. So much of it is not possible for me to express to you in this context.

At the core, it is an expression of attaining the ultimate goal of human life. Great enlightenment. Supreme inner peace. The symbols and structure of this carving represent the actual methods to achieve this goal as taught by accomplished meditation masters. Everyone has different wishes and capacities and are trying to achieve happiness in their own way. Through inner peace we achieve all our wishes.

At a mundane level, this carving contains four Manaia. They each contain Stirling silver inlays for their eyes. This represents being able to see what is precious in life.

The four Manaia speak of the support we receive through whanau, friends and our spiritual teachers...

There are two Paua inlay which represent hidden jewels within of our own being. The middle aspect of the carving contains no detailing. This is symbolic of our innermost pure nature.

The four wings represent the four great practices of attainment. Purification, refuge, making requests and receiving blessings.

The Koru running along the top of the Manaia bodies symbolise a journey, a new beginning, an awakening. The markings in-between show that each aspect of our journey is interconnected through cause and effect.

There is a lot of meaning held within this carving and this is a glimpse of some of it.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the carving and over time come to fully understand all the various layers of meaning imbued in this creation. I wish you and your family the deepest peace and happiness.
