Manawapou - Lifeblood

There is something about this simple design that I really like. I see so many levels of meaning that it communicates.

There are many legends surrounding Tiki masks. In general, such masks can represent various Deities, guardian protectors, or specific tīpuna (ancestors) whom are believed to be auspiciously connected to the wearer.

I have named this Taonga Manawapou. This means lifeblood, or anything to support life. As such it is symbolic of increasing the life-supporting energy of the wearer and symbolises improved health, vigour and well-being. As such this carving depicts the central channel being endowed with life-force and blessings. These are seen to be entering the crown chakra of the Tiki mask.

The most precious opportunity to develop spiritually exists now. By taking the essence of this human life we can tap into the ‘energy of life’ and therefore fulfil the goal of our existence.

The eyes are an inlay made of buffalo horn. This symbolises great strength.

On the back of this carving is an engraving of a symbolic cup. This is the cup of our mind. It is being filled with wisdom blessings and new life till it is overflowing. This represents great joy entering into our life and because it is overflowing, this symbolises being able to freely give this joy and benefit to others too.

The carving has been registered in my database of work. I sincerely hope you enjoy the carving and over time come to fully understand all the various layers of meaning imbued in this creation. I wish you and your family the deepest peace and happiness.
