Matau - Whakauruuru - integrated

Dear friend, Kia Ora

This Matau is named Whakauruuru meaning mixed, intermingled, blended, combined, cosmopolitan, integrated, mingled. It symbolises the melting pot of the world and its various cultures. Each have their good qualities and strengths. This is symbolised by the mixture of materials that make up this design. As well as being a bone carving, it also contains lovely Mother of Pearl and copper inlays.

In general, the Matau signifies abundance, nourishment, and strength. As such it attracts the energies of protection, peace, prosperity, and good health. A fishhook is a symbol that provides safe journey over water. Therefore, it is considered a good luck charm by travellers and seafarers.

The back of this Taonga has no markings. It symbolises great purity of mind and the common essence of all living beings. At another level it shows a great secret, that depicts the true nature of all things.

As such, the Matau is symbolic of navigating our own lives with wisdom and insight.
