Tomairaki - Mau Tangata - welcoming and generous

Dear friend, Kia Ora

This Taonga is a Tomairaki called Mau Tangata meaning welcoming and generous.

It is a Tomairaki (Tōmairangi) which is the reminiscent of a dew drop. It is associated with the following poem gifted to me to share with you by the very esteemed Kaumātua and Tohonga of Na te Upoko Runaka o Te Runaka ki Otautahi o Kai Tahu, Rev’d Maurice Manawaroa Gray MNZM, LTh,JP.

“Ka patapata iho taku whakaakoranga āno he ua, ka maturuturu iho taku kupu ano he tomairangi (tomairaki), me te ua punehunehu ki runga i te tipu hou. - My teaching drops like rain, my words trickle forth like dew and the misty rain on new shoots”

Tomairaki such as this make a wonderful touch stone as they their tactile surface is comforting to rub. Over time, when used in this way, the oils transferred onto this stone will gradually deepen the sheen, complexion, and lustre of this piece.

This is made from authentic Ngāi Tahu Pounamu. I am a registered Artisan licensed to purchase raw Pounamu through Ngāi Tahu’s authenticity assurance scheme developed under the authority of the Ngāi Tahu tribal council. The Ngāi Tahu authenticity code is: B200NG7S. It can be traced here:

This raw stone is Kahurangi, the Māori word for ‘precious’ or ‘prized possession’. It is the lightest green of the stone types with delicate translucency (when carved thinly). Endless combinations of Pounamu types occur, and no two pieces are the same guaranteeing that your Pounamu is unique. Within this block of stone, the colours range from a warm brown or tan, through to light creamy greens, and a deep dark green as we get closer to the heart of the stone. This stone was sourced from the rivers of Tai Poutini ki te Raki, the northern region of the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

Each Taonga is handcrafted and is unique. The difference in each piece of stone makes these incredibly individualised. I have gone for the semi-mat finish as is more in line with traditionally carved pounamu taonga.

It has been bound using the half-hitch knot technique and features a size adjustable cord.
