Tau o te ate - heart-strings

Dear friend, Kia Ora

This Taonga is named Tau o te ate meaning heart-strings, deep emotion, feelings or soul mate, lover, partner, darling. The general concept is that two become one.

The top half of the Taonga is Pounamu. The variety of stone is Kahurangi. It was sourced from the rivers of Tai Poutini ki te Raki, the northern region of the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. It has a semi-matt finish and therefore is to be used as a touch stone. This will become hand polished over time as the oils from your body and hands enter the stone. Becoming a part of you.

I am a registered Artisan licensed to purchase raw Pounamu through Ngāi Tahu’s authenticity assurance scheme developed under the authority of the Ngāi Tahu tribal council. Authentic New Zealand Pounamu displays a unique traceability code. Only licensed individuals or businesses can use this mark, as only those following specific regulations can purchase the raw stone from Ngāi Tahu.  The Ngāi Tahu authenticity code is: B200NGAZ. It can be traced here:

Just below this is a thin inlay of copper joining the bone and pounamu. Copper is highly conductive, this is symbolic of being able to channel great and powerful energy into whatever positive activities we do. It depicts a joining of what is above to what is below.

Inlayed below Pounamu is two Manaia which merge into each other. Therefore, not only has the bone become one with the Pounamu, the Manaia are also one with each other. As such this Taonga represents strong love, interconnectedness, and being united. This can be interpreted in many ways.

The inlays for the eyes are brass. This symbolises strength, abundance and the inner wealth of higher spiritual attainments. Therefore, gives rise to deep inner peace.
